Our History and our Community

Chattahoochee Christian Church was originally founded as a Methodist Church in 1860, nearly one year prior to the beginning of the Civil War.  We are an independent Christian congregation with an Appalachian heritage going back to some of the most challenging times in America's history. Our cemetery is the resting place of two Civil War veterans as well as veterans of other wars.  I'd Climb the Highest Mountain, a movie filmed in north Georgia in 1950 features shots of our church.  The movie starrred Susan Hayward and William Lundigan and depicted an itinerant preacher and his wife who move south to serve in the mountains that surround present-day Helen.

Visiting Helen, Georgia and the surrounding area is like a journey going back in time.  The Bavarian-style structures in the small town of Helen were all part of the vision of John E. Mitchell sometime around 1913.  If you prefer hiking, the Georgia mountains offer many trails of varying difficulties.  The southern trailhead of the Appalachian Trail is a short distance from Helen.  For the mountain biking community, Georgia remains one of the most popular destinations in America with numerous biking trails of varying degrees of difficulty.

No matter your reason for being in Helen - a permanent resident, seasonal resident, or visitor - Chattahoochee Christian Church welcomes you and invites you to worship with us.
